I have a solution for those with MacBooks. If you open the document in google chrome, the macOS VoiceOver will read any selection in googledocs. Voiceover is in the Accessibility menu in macOS, shortcut is Ctr + command + esc. Ironically, macOS VoiceOver doesn't work in safari with google docs.
